Kolkata Knight Riders

The Kolkata Knight Riders are an Indian T20 cricket franchise which was formed back in 2008. The franchise was bought by world famous Indian actor, Shahrukh Khan, along with actress Juli Chawla Mehta and her husband Jay Mehta for the price of Rs. 357 crores. The teams official home stadium is the famous Eden Gardens located in Kolkata with a seating capacity of around 90,000. The Kolkata Knight Riders are definitely one of the most beloved franchises in India despite never actually winning any silverware. The teams officials colours are purple and gold, and they are the second most valuable franchise brand in India with a total of around 46 million USD. The Kolkata Knight Riders have an official slogan which is in Bengali,“ Korbo, Lorbo, Jeetbo re” and it translates to “We will do it, Fight for it, Win it.”

The Knight Riders made a good start in their T20 journey, in 2008, winning both their opening encounters in the Indian Premier League. But because of issues on and off the field and inconsistent form from the players, the Kolkata Knight Riders did not progress well in the tournament as they finished their inaugural Indian Premier League season at number 6. But even though they did not do so well on the field, the Kolkata Knight Riders were well ahead in revenues making a profit of Rs 13 crores thanks to the strong support shown by the most famous man in India, Shahrukh Khan.

The 2009 season was much worse for the Knight Riders as they managed to win only 3 of their 14 matches in the Indian Premier League. They finished the season at the very bottom of the table with only 7 points. But still, just like the previous season, thanks to their off the field promotions the franchise did very well financially making a size-able profit.

The 2010 season what a tight one, with 4 teams finish in 14 points in the Indian Premier League including the Kolkata Knight Riders. Because of the net run-rate they ended up finishing at the number 6 spot. The fans must have been pleased with their performance after a dismal showing in the last season as they managed to win half the games they played in the 2010 edition of the Indian Premier League.

It was in the recently concluded 2011 season that has been, by far, the most successful season for the Kolkata Knight Riders on the pitch. They made some smart changes in the team and management and managed to become a formidable opposition, which led to them finishing at 4th place in the Indian Premier League. The Knight Riders even managed to go to the T20 Champions League through the tournament qualifiers and did well in the group stages only failing to move on to the semi finals due to their net run-rate.

The Knight Riders are now being led by the Indian national cricketer Gautam Gambhir. And with all of Kolkata behind them along with the support of a bigger than life figure like Mr. Shahrukh Khan, who looks to help his franchise out whenever they need it, the Knight Riders are one of the teams that has a real potential to possibly dominate T20 cricket in the near future.
