After some dismal performances by the Indian cricket team in England just a few months ago, it was now their chance to shine under home conditions. With a much younger looking squad for both the countries, a lot of players were looking to prove themselves in the international arena. The match was played in good spirit by both the teams, and after 86.1 overs of cricket it was India who came out with an easy win in this opening match of the series.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni managed to win the toss for India and decided that they’ll have a bat first. They did not get off to the best of starts, losing Parthiv Patel in just the 4th over of the innings. But with minor contributions from Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli the Indian team managed to crawl to 123 for 4 wickets in the 29th over. The stage was now set for Suresh Reina and Mahendra Singh Dhoni to really press on the accelerator and that’s exactly what they did. The two batsmen put on a 72 run partnership in the next 10 overs before Raina got dismissed for 61 runs in 55 balls.

Dhoni went on though, playing right through the innings and scoring an unbeaten 87 runs off just 70 balls as he help India reach that all important milestone of 300 runs in their 50 overs. The pick off the bowlers for England has to be the experienced Graeme Swann who finished with figures of 1 wicket for 35 runs in his 10 overs, bowling very economically in the middle overs. Still a good batting display by the home team and it’ll now take quite some getting for the English boys to chase this target.

England needed a good start in the second innings but were rather disappointing as they lost two key players, Craig Kieswetter and Kevin Peterson in the first 10 overs. Opening batsmen Alaister Cook was still there at the crease though and played well to score 60 runs of 63 balls before being dismissed in the 23rd over of the innings. And from then on, it was all down hill for England as they lost wickets in regular intervals and ended up with a dismal 174 runs all out falling well short of India’s 300 run total. Ravichandra Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja both bowled exceptionally well for India taking 3 wickets each and giving away only 35 and 34 runs respectively.

A big win for team India in this opening ODI of the season. The crowd and the players must have been happy with how the team performed on the pitch. The win should also give them confidence in the upcoming matches of the series as there are still 4 ODI’s left to play between these two sides.
